| Abstract | 나가르쥬나가 짓고 구마라집이 한역한 『대지도론』은 三論인 『中論』, 『百論』, 『十二門論』과 함께 한문 불교권에서 인도 중관학의 四論으로 꼽히는 중요한 논서이다. 그리고 『대지도론』은 여시아문, 바가바, 왕사성, 비구대중, 보살 등 불교의 중요한 기본개념들을 다루는 백과사전적 논서이기도 하다. 이를 위해 『대지도론』은 설일체유부의 자료를 많이 이용하면서도 동시에 여러 부파의 다양한 이론 소개를 위해 각종 자료들을 인용하고 있다. 에띠엔 라모뜨(Etienne Lamotte, 1903-1983)는 『대지도론』이 인용하는 자료들의 근거를 밝히고 연구하는 작업에 40여년을 전념하였다. 그의 작업은 『대지도론』에 대한 이해가 한문본을 넘서 불교 경전에 대한 폭넓은 시야가 필요함을 보여주고 있다. 본고는 에띠엔 라모뜨의 『대지도론』 번역과 주석 (Le Traite de la Grande Vertu de Sagesse de Nagarjuna (Mahaprajnaparamitasastra)), 전 5권 중 제1권 4장과 5장을 다룬다. 제1장이 마하반야바라밀을 설한 인연을 다루고, 제2장과 제3장이 如是我聞의 의미를 다룬다면, 제4장은 佛 또는 바가바(Bhagavat)에 대한 것으로서, 바가바의 의미를 다루고 있으며, 제5장은 왕사성(Rajagrha)으로서 붓다가 왕사성에 머무른 인연을 다루고 있다. 본고는 라모뜨의 『대지도론』에 대한 번역과 주석에서 보이는 접근방식을 한글역들과 비교하고, 그리고 무엇보다도 텍스트를 분석하는데 있어서 라모뜨 방식의 유효성을 드러내 보이고자 한다.
Etienne Lamotte (1903 - 1983) is well known for his French translation titled Le Traite de la Grand Vertu de Sagesse de Nagarjuna (Mahaprajnaparamitasastra) in 5 volumes. Nagarjuna’s original Sanskrit work has not come down to us, but only through a Chinese translation, the 『大智度論』 by Kumarajiva. Lamotte’s annotated translation is based on this Chinese version. The 『大智度論』 is regarded as a key treatise of the Indian Madhyamika school together with the Three Madhyamika Treatises of the 『中論』(Madhyamika-sastra), the 『百論』(Sata-sastra) and the 『十二門論』(Dvadasa-nikaya-sastra) in Chinese Buddhism. At the same time, the 『大智度論』 is markedly collected systematic explanations of classical Indian Mahayana Buddhism which deals with the key Buddhist concepts like Evam maya srutam, Bhagavat, Rajagrha, Bodhisattva etc. Lamotte’s annotated translation of the Mahaprajnaparamitasastra is famous for many thousands of comprehensive notes based on his lifelong academic endeavor. This enables the full understanding of Nagarjuna’s original Sanskrit work. This paper deals with the chapter 4 and 5 of the volume 1 out of 5. The chapter 4 is about the meaning of the Bhagavat or the Buddha and the chapter 5 is about the Buddha’s preference for Rajagrha. According to the Mahaprajnaparamitasastra, the exposition of Bhagavat and Rajagrha is regarded as important in the sense of achieving the credibility of the entire work. This paper aims to show Etienne Lamotte’s scholastic achievement in his annotated translation of Mahaprajnaparamitasastra through the analysis on his academic approach based on the comparative study between his work and korean counterparts. |
