Abstract본 논문에서는 샨따락쉬따(Santaraksita)의 주저 가운데 하나인 땃뜨 와상그라하 (Tattvasamgraha)의 「성언량 탐색」(Sabdavicara)절의 내용을 통해 후대의 인도불교도들이 성언량을 독립된 지식의 원천으로 간주 하지 않고 비량의 일종이라고 여기는 진나(Dignaga)의 입장을 어떻게 계승하고 발전시켜나가는지에 대해 고찰한다. 우선 샤바라(Sabara)와 꾸마릴라(Kumarila)등의 미맘사학파의 진나 비판을 반박하고 진나의초기 입장을 변호하는 과정 속에서 샨따락쉬따가 관련 텍스트들을 이용 하는 방법을 분석하여 성언량의 비량 귀속이라는 담론의 역사적 맥락을 살펴보려고 하였다. 그리고 그러한 논쟁 속에서 도출된 불교도의 입장 이 어떻게 붓다의 언설을 입증하는 방식을 제한하는지에 대해 논의함으로써 성언량을 독립된 지식획득의 수단으로 여기지 않는 불교도들에게 해당 담론이 갖는 의의를 평가해보고자 하였다.

This paper examines one section of the Tattvasamgraha where Santaraksita reaffirms Dignaga`s thesis that linguistic means of gaining information (Sabda-pramana) is to be considered as a sub-category of inference (anumana). In the Sabdavicara section, by drawing upon Sabara, Kumarila and Dignaga`s relevant texts, Santaraksita tries to prove the infallibility of the Dignaga`s original position. However, in so doing, Santaraksita resorts to a couple of tactics to manipulate those texts to accomplish his goal: Santaraksita 1. replaces key terms in the opponent`s text as he cites it (Sabara), 2. changes the apparent meaning of the text by reinterpreting a loose term and ignoring (or not quoting) the specific portion of the author`s own commentary (Dignaga), and 3. does not answer legitimate counterargument immediately until he fixes/reinterprets the Dignaga`s text to meet the opponent`s standards (Kumarila). In this process of textual manipulation, Santaraksita succeeds in presenting the Dharmakirti`s position (that the meaning of words is confined to the intention of the speaker) as the long-held traditional stance of the Buddhist epistemological school on the matter. The paper concludes with an appreciation of the fact that, by subsuming “Sabda” under “anumana” and by confining the meaning of a linguistic expression to the intention of speaker (vivaksa), the Buddhists came to prove the validity of the Buddha`s words not by inspecting the validity of words themselves but by showing the special qualities of the Buddha that indicates the truthfulness of speaker.
