Abstract | There have some recent attempts at conducting Buddhist-Christian dialogue in a scientific age. This article offers an analysis of the pioneering attempt made by Burnett Hillman Streeter (1874-1937), a famous biblical scholar and Christian theologian. Special references will be made to his Bampton Lectures published as The Buddha and the Christ in 1932. The article attempts to show that his comparative studies of Buddhism and Christianity were largely shaped by his theological concern as well as his understanding of the relationship between religion and science. Furthermore, his studies of Buddhism influenced his understanding of Christian theology and its relationship to science. Although some of Streeter’s suggestions might have been surpassed by the most recent developments in the related fields of study, his ground-breaking effort deserves particular attention and further investigation. |
