Meditation forms an integral part of Śaṅkara's teachings on liberation. And Śaṅkara grants that yoga can be a proximate means to right knowledge. For that reason, the influence of yoga on his work is all the more significant. Śaṅkara admits that the Upaniṣads themselves speak of yoga practice. He cites passages referring to yoga postures, control of the senses, and meditation. His illustration here of the injunction for meditation is most significant: śrotavyo mantavyo nididhyāsitavyaḥ (Bṛhadāraṇyaka Upaniṣad II. 4. 5). The discipline of hearing(śravaṇa), reflecting(manana), and constantly meditating(nididhyāsana) upon the teachings concerning the Brahman or Ātman is the method which is set out for students of Vedānta. However the Advaita Vedānta rejects yogic intuition as a pramāṇa of Brahman. The path of yoga independent of the Veda can never lead to the ultimate goal. For Śaṅkara yoga is not a means to liberation, but it is necessary to maintain the practice of regulating the flow of ideas about the Ātman in the face of the disturbance generated by the results of past karmas. He argues that since the path of yoga and the knowledge of Sāṃkhya are not dependent upon the Vedas, they do not lead to the highest state. Śaṅkara's system of liberation is ultimately concerned with the removal of ignorance(avidyā) by means of true knowledge. The role of yoga must remain subsidiary here to that of knowledge.
