| Abstract | 본고는 불성과 영성의 개념을 심층의식의 단계적 설명과 관련시켜 고찰한 방식에 의거하여 후기 중관사상에 나타나는 공성의 개념을 살펴본 것이다. 불성의 개념에 대해서는『불성론』에, 영성의 개념에 대해서는 스즈키 다이세츠의 견해에 의거해 살펴보았으며, 그것은『불성론』과 스즈키가 각각의 개념에 대해 불교적 입장을 잘 드러내고 있다고 생각했기 때문이다. 『불성론』에서의 불성은 궁극적인 유적 존재, 수행을 통해 얻어지는 존재, 공덕을 지닌 존재의 의미를 가지고 있으며, 스즈키의 영성에는 무차별․무분별의 의식이라는 의미를 가지고 있다. 이러한 불성과 영성의 개념은 의식의 내면적 단계와 관계를 가지는 까닭에, 보다 구체적으로 의식의 단계로서 설정이 가능하다. 이러한 의식의 단계적 설명은 후기 중관사상에서 공성에 대한 논증의 과정에 나타나는 일련의 개념 즉 외경-형상-유식-무아 개념의 심층적 전개와도 상통하고 있다. 이 후기 중관사상의 인식론적 논의는 나가르주나의『근본중송』에 나타나는 이제설과 후기불교의 인식론적 고찰이 어우러져 제법의 무자성 논증이 인식론상에서 상세하게 밝혀지고 있는 것이다. 그와같이『불성론』의 불성 개념이나 스즈키의 영성 개념, 그리고 후기 중관의 공성의 개념이 모두 인식론상의 고찰과 밀접한 관련을 갖는 까닭에 보다 구체적으로 각각의 개념을 인식론상의 구조와 관련하여 연관성을 살펴보았다. 이 고찰의 결과 각각의 개념들에 대한 인식론상의 이해가 분명해졌고 아울러 철학적 개념들에 대한 심리적ㆍ인식론적 연구의 필요성도 느꼈다. 오늘날 한국사회에서 많은 논의가 되고 있는 불성․영성․공성 등의 개념이 보다 선명하게 이해되는 하나의 계기가 되고자한다.
The concepts of Spirituality and Buddha-nature are the controversial and important concepts from the aspects of society and religion in contemporary times. This paper aims to examine the concepts of Spirituality and Buddha-nature from the perspective of Later Madhyamaka thoughts. Before entering the Later Madhyamaka thoughts, first of all, we investigated the concepts of Spirituality and Buddha-nature from Suzuki's works and Bul-sung-ron(佛性論) respectively. According to our investigation, we confirmed that the notion of Spirituality of Suzuki have the relationship with the very deep and indiscernible consciousness which are said to be 'indifferent' and 'indiscriminate' in Suzuki's work and the notion of Buddha-nature in Bul-sung-ron is something that are Ultimate-being in deep consciousness and obtainable from the training and full of the merit and virtue. Considering the notions of Spirituality and Buddha-nature in Suzuki's works and Bul-sung-ron, the aspect of consciousness are remarkable and noticeable. Therefore we can understood that this aspect of the consciousness is very important to consider the Later Madhyamaka thoughts. According to the Madhyamakālamkara-vṛtti of Śāntarakṣita, the representive work of Later Madhyamaka thoughts, we can find that the concept of Śūnyatā as the Ultimate-being are presented in the deep aspect of our consciousness and the pursuit of the Śūnyatā with the Logical method is an ultimate work which functions in inside our consciousness. Pursuing the deeping process of the consciousness for the concept of Śūnyatā, we can find the spectrums of our consciousness, that is, the sphere of Outer-world, the sphere of Idea, the sphere of Mind-only, the sphere of Non-mind. Considering these spectrums of our consciousness in Madhyamakālamakara-vṛtti, we can undestand that the Mind-only spectrum of our consciousness corresponds to the concept of Buddha-nature in Bul-sung-ron and the Non-mind spectrum of our consciousness corresponds to the concept of the Spirituality in the Suzuki's works. Besides these spectrums relative to the concepts of Spirituality and Buddha-nature, there is another sphere of our consciousness, that is, the Ultimate-state that is indescribable with our word. In concluding, we can easily understand the difficult concepts of Buddhism such as Śūnyatā through the comparative study of Later Madhyamaka thoughts and Suzuki's works or Bul-sung-ron.
