Abstract이 논문은 유부와 경량부의 인과론을 비판적으로 계승하고 있는 초기 유식사상의 알라야식과 활동식 사이의 긴밀한 인과관계에 의해 형성된 이숙의 개념에 보이는 인과론의 특징을 사상사적으로 해명하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 사실 알라야식은 종자설과도 깊은 관련을 가지는데, 특히 종자와 이숙의 개념은 아비달마불교와 유가행파의 인과론의 설명원리로서 매우 중요한 의미를 가진다. 따라서 이 논문은 유부에서는 6因의 하나로서 ‘이숙인(異熟因, vipākahetu)’의 개념과, 경량부에서는 ‘상속의 특수한 변화(相續轉變差別, saṃtatipariṇāmaviśeṣa)’에 의한 이숙의 개념에 주목하였다. 이를 토대로 이 논문은 유가행파의 인과론을 해명하기 위하여 알라야식과 이숙의 긴밀한 관계 및 식전변의 구조에 보이는 이숙(異熟, vipāka)의 개념에 초점을 두고 관련 텍스트의 기술들을 면밀히 살펴보았다. 결론적으로 이 논문은 아비달마불교에서 유부와 경량부의 이숙개념이나 종자설을 비판적으로 계승한 유식학파의 인과론은 세친의 식전변설을 통해 동시성(同時性)과 이시성(異時性)이 결합한 연쇄적인 이중인과의 구조로 변천되고 있음을 사상사적으로 조망하였다.

This paper intends to explain characteristics of the causality theory as presented by the early Vijñaptimātra school by focusing on the concept of “ripening” (vipāka), which is based on the intimate relation between ālayavijñāna and pravṛttivijñāna. Such relationship was noted by this school which critically followed the causality theories of the Sarvāstivāda and Sautrāntika schools. In fact, the concept of ālayavijñāna is closely related to the bīja theory, in which the two concepts of bīja and vipāka have a particular significance as an explanatory principle of the causality theories of Abhidharma Buddhism and Yogācāravādin. In this respect, this research pays attention to the concept of vipākahetu, which is regarded as one of the six causes by the Sarvāstivāda school. It also takes note of the concept of vipāka, which the Sautrāntika school associates with saṃtatipariṇāmaviśeṣa. Based on these two concepts, this paper carefully analyzes descriptions of the related texts in order to explicate the causality theory of Yogācāra system. For this purpose, a special attention is given to the intimate relationship between ālayavijñāna and vipāka and also to the concept of vipāka as appearing in the structure of vijñānapariṇāma. In conclusion, this paper clarifies from the perspective of history of thought that Yogācāra’s theory of causality, which critically followed the Sarvāstivāda’s concept of vipāka and the Sautrāntika’s theory of bīja in Abhidharma Buddhism, has transformed into the structure of double causalities that combines both simultaneity and heterochrony through Vasubandhu’s theory of vijñāna-pariṇāma.
