Abstract관정(灌頂)은 중생을 구제하려는 불보살과 신행자를 연결하는 結緣灌頂과 印可灌頂이 주를 이루었지만 차츰 수행자의 수행 단계와 스승으로서의 지위를 인정하는 등 그 의미와 목적이 다양해지고 있다. 관정의례를 초기밀교 시대에 해당하는 잡밀(雜密)과 『대일경』과 『금강정경』이 출현한 순밀(純密)의 시대로 나누어 살펴보면, 잡밀의 경궤(經軌)에서 보이는 관정은 인도 신앙에서 비롯된 불보살의 형태와 구호자로서 관정의 의미가 그 중심을 이루고 있다. 관세음보살과 관련한 신앙에서도 관정은 제자로 하여금 대보살과 인연을 맺고 수법을 닦고 발원하는 등으로 잡밀시대에 이미 그 전형이 마련되었지만, 천수관음의 의궤류에는 유식(唯識)의 불신관(佛身觀)이 반영되어 수행자 스스로 구호자가 되려는 의지를 보인다. 순밀시대에 접어들기 전 『대일경』의 선구 경전으로서 『金剛手灌頂經』은, 밀교 수행의 입장에서 관정을 도차제(道次第)의 의례로 수용하여 진언 및 만다라 등과 같은 수행의 소재로 확립한 모습을 보인다. 『대일경』에서는 진언문(眞言門)의 수행 이념을 확립하여 『화엄경』의 실천적 계승자임을 밝히고, 『금강정경』은 관정을 중심으로 밀교의 유가행을 세부적으로 구성함으로써, 외교적(外敎的) 소재에 의해 출발한 관정이 수행의 도차제와 의례의 중심에서 중요한 위치에 있음을 확인시키고 있다.

In the age of Mahayāna Buddhism a lot of religious elements like Mantra, Dharani, Abhisekha and Homa which was originated from Indian's ancient religion began to appeared in Buddhist scriptures. The rite of consecration(Abhisekha) was adopted in the ceremony of enthronement of Indian prince as a king and was adopted in Buddhist scriptures like Gaṇḍavyūha Sūtra (華嚴經) to approve the achievement of Bodhisattva practice of Ten Stages(十地). The early form of Abhisekha was to form a relationships between Buddha or Bodhisattva and believers but soon after the Abhisekha was transformed to demonstrate the stage of Buddhist practices or to approved accomplishment of practices. The rite of Abhisekha is changed reflecting development of ages of Esoteric Buddhism which is divided by Miscellaneous Esoteric Buddhism(雜密) and Orthodox Esoteric Buddhism(純密) which doctrine is appeared in Shinon Order(眞言宗) of Japanese Buddhism which in the scriptures of Miscellaneous Esoteric Buddhism the purpose of rite is mainly for saving sentient beings but in scriptures of Orthodox Esoteric Buddhism the purpose of rite is reflecting the stage of Yagacarya practice of Esoteric Buddhism which the practitioner achieve the Buddha's holy body and her or himself save sentient beings. In the Abhisekha Tantra of Vajrapani (金剛手灌頂經) it is found some elements of developing stages of Esoteric Buddhism that the Mantra, Mandala, Abhisekha ritual of the Tantra inherited the doctrines of Ornament Sutra which consequently is to practice and achieve the internal stages of Vairocana Buddha showing transitional elements of Esoteric Buddhism. The Abhisekha Tantra of Vajrapani is historically important as it has provided the lots of foundation of Esoteric Buddhism to the formations of Mahāvairocana Sūtra (大日經) and Vajra Peak Tantra (金剛頂經) that the Mahāvairocana Sūtra has devoted to the formation of Orthodox Esoteric Buddhism that enabled the formation of Yogācāra practice of Vajra Peak Tantra.
