Abstract | 『반야심경』은 동아시아에서 불교의 의례 의식이나 불교 사상을 이해하는데 있어 가장 널리 알려져 있는 중요한 경전이다. 그렇지만 그렇게 널리 알려져 있는데 비해 실제 그 내용을 이해하는 일은 쉬운 일이 아니다. 왜냐하면 전통적으로 현장역의 소본 『반야심경』에 의존하여 『반야심경』을 이해하려 하기 때문이다. 대본 『반야심경』과 비교해 보면 소본 『반야심경』은 상당히 축약되어 있을 뿐만 아니라, 대소본의 한역본 양 본에 동일하게 나타나듯 그 내용에 있어 반야바라밀다에 대한 이해가 상당히 복잡하게 나타나고 있다. 즉 대승불교의 사상적 의미를 담고 있는 공성의 체득으로서 반야바라밀다에 대한 강조가 이루어지고 그와 더불어 반야바라밀다가 주문으로 등장하고 있는 것이다. 이러한 복잡한 모습을 보이는 『반야심경』의 내용은 그것을 이해하고자 하는 불교도에게 오랜 기간 상당한 어려움을 주었다고 생각된다. 따라서 본고는 대·소본의 『반야심경』을 비교함으로써 『반야심경』이 대승불교의 핵심적인 개념인 공에 대한 체계적인 설명과 공성의 체득으로서 반야바라밀다에 대한 선양을 목적으로 하고 있는, 그 내용이 분명한 경전임을 밝히고자 한다. 이와 더불어 반야바라밀다를 주문으로 간주하는 전통적인 한문의 번역은 범어 원전에 비추어보면 오역일 가능성도 있다는 것을 지적하고자 한다. 결론적으로 대·소본의 내용에 대한 비교를 통해, 소본 『반야심경』은 대본 『반야심경』의 핵심만 추출해 만든 독송용 경전인 것을 분명히 하고자 한다.
It is needless to say that the Heart sutra is the most widely known and philosophically important Buddhist scriptures in East Asia. However, even though it is so widely known and important, it is not easy today to understand the correct meaning of the intention of Heart Sutra precisely. I think that it is difficult for us to understand this scriptures because we are too dependent on the Heart sutra of Hsüan-tsang’s Translation. The reason of what I am saying for this is that, besides the Small version of the Heart Sutra, there are many Heart Sutras of the Large version and it is thought that the understanding of the Large version should be based on the assumption of Heart Sutra. Therefore, in this paper, I attempt to compare the Large version and Small version of Heart Sutra and examine the contents of the controversy related to the spell of the Prajñāpāramitā. The issue of whether or not Prajñāpāramitā is a Spell is one of the most important problems in the understanding of Heart Sutra, which is a problem that has plagued many researchers. In the Heart Sutra, it is emphasized that the philosophical explanations of Mahāyāna Buddhism about Prajñāpāramitā are made and it is necessary to learn and practice this Prajñāpāramitā. After that in the same Heart sutra, suddenly, the Prajñāpāramitā is regarded as a spell, and as another spell, that is "gate gate … svāhā" is appearing. Considering the Prajñāpāramitā as an spell in the Chinese Translation of Heart Sutra in both Large version and Small version it is thought that the correct meaning of Heart Sutra is not conveyed. And I think that there is a possibility that the Chinese translators of this Heart Sutra is misunderstood and translated, or that many translators have accepted the translations of Hsüan-tsang and Kumarajīva as it is. Through the examination in this article, I clarified the position that I should not consider Prajñāpāramitā as a Spell in "Heart Sutra". In Buddhist scriptures of Mahāyāna Buddhism, there are occasions when the Prajñāpāramitā is a spell, but at least it seems that the Prajñāpāramitā is not a spell in this Heart Sutra. It is because of the clear description of the Prajñāpāramitā itself, not a spell, but the Enlightend state through Wisdom, as like "the Spell spoken in the state of Prajñāpāramitā (Prajñāpāramitāyām ukto mantraḥ)." And as a boundary to realize the truth of the Empty of the Intrincic Nature, Prajñāpāramitā clearly states that it is the object, or teaching, to be practiced and taught by the Buddhist People including the son and the daughter of good family. It is considered that the spell to be spoken in the state of Prajñāpāramitā and the spell as Prajñāpāramitā itself must be clearly distinguished. However, it seems that a lot of Chinese Translators were not distinguished the difference in this part. In this sense, I believe that the spell of Prajñāpāramitā, which appears in the Enlightened State of Wisdom, was created as an intention to encourage the people who strive for the achievement of the Prajñāpāramitā or to promote the Prajñāpāramitā.
