| Abstract | 반신(半神)부터 성스러운 여성신격을 포괄하는 말로서 샤이바 전통에서 요기니(yoginī)를 사용한 것에 대응하여 바즈라야나는 유사한 경우에 다키니(ḍākinī)라는 용어를 선호한다. 후대로 갈수록 바즈라야나의 다키니는 수행자를 해탈로 이끄는 강력한 능력을 지닌, 밀교 수행에 신비적이며 핵심적인 존재로 그려진다. 그러므로 다키니의 서술은 해탈도에서 지혜(prajñā)가 강조되는 탄트라의 수행 전통을 이해하는 데 중요한 맥락을 제공한다. 인간을 위협하고 해칠 수 있는 위험한 존재라는 점, 그리고 ḍākinī에 해당하는 티벳역이 말해주듯이 하늘을 나는 존재(mkha’ ’gro ma)라는 점이 일반적으로 그려지는 다키니의 특징(lakṣaṇa)이다. 하지만 다키니에 대한 서술을 연대와 전통에 따라 면밀히 살펴보면, 이 두 가지가 처음부터 대표적인 다키니의 특징으로서 불교 탄트라에서 확립되지 않았음을 알 수 있다. 다키니 기원 자체는 불교 밖에 뿌리를 둔 것으로 불교에서 차용한 개념이기 때문이다. 그렇다면 바즈라야나는 힌두교의 다키니와 불교의 다키니를 어떻게 차별화하는가. 이러한 과정은 불교 탄트라 문헌에서 다키니가 묘사되는 구체적인 내용을 분석함으로써 밝혀볼 수 있을 것이다. 이에 본고는 다키니의 특징이 발전하는 단계를 원전을 통해 살펴보는 데 주안점을 둔다. 특히 요기니탄트라 문헌들을 주석하는 저자들이 다키니의 의미를 해명하는 부분을 통해 다키니의 위상이 확립되는 과정을 추적해 본다.
A sacred female being, ḍākinī, is described as a significant figure in an early Yoginītantra, the Sarvabuddhasamāyogaḍākinījālaśaṃvara while the position of ḍākinī remains as having a secondary status in Yogottaratantras. In addition, as the Tibetan translation of ḍākinī, mkha' 'gro ma (sky-goer), shows, they are described as having a capability of flying. However, the emphasis on this characteristic of the ḍākinī was not developed in early non-Yoginītantras. Therefore, this paper aims to demonstrate the development of the characteristics of ḍākinī from passages related to ḍākinī in Buddhist tantric texts. In the beginning of this paper, previous studies on ḍākinī are introduced. Then, descriptions of the term ḍākinī in non-Yoginītantras such as the Mahāvairocanābhisambodhi, Sarvatathāgatattvasaṃgraha, and Guhyasamājatantra are analysed in the second chapter. And in order to elucidate the elevated position of ḍākinī in Yoginītantras, verses from the Sarvabuddhasamāyogaḍākinījālaśaṃvara, one of the earliest Yoginītantra, are examined in the third chapter. Lastly, the nirukti-styled interpretation of ḍākinī expounded by later Vajrayāna authors, i.e., in Bhavabhaṭṭa’s Vivṛti, a commentary on the Cakrasaṃvaratantra and in Ratnākaraśānti’s Guṇavatī, a commentary on the Mahāmāyātantra, is introduced.
