| Abstract | 쫑카파는 그의 사상을 최초로 본격적으로 기술한 『보리도차제대론』의 <비파샤나장> 전체에 걸쳐 무자성과 연기가 동일한 의미를 갖는다는 소위 ‘중관파 불공의 승법’을 논증하고 있다. 이 ‘중관파 불공의 승법’은 쫑카파 전생애를 걸쳐 중시된 사상적 입장으로 무자성에 대한 분명한 입장을 드러내고 있다. 하지만 무자성을 논증하는 <비파샤나장>과 거의 동일한 부분에서 쫑카파는 자성을 승의제 내지는 법성으로서 긍정하는 언설을 전개하고 있다. 무자성의 논증에 심혈을 기울이는 쫑카파가 자성을 긍정하는 유자성의 논술을 하고 있는 것은 상당히 모순된 듯이 보이는 것으로, 쫑카파를 이해하는 데 중요한 부분이라 생각된다. 이러한 유자성의 논술은 쫑카파가 의지하는 인도의 중관논사인 찬드라키르티의 입장을 반영하고 있는 것으로, 쫑카파도 기본적으로 찬드라키르티의 입장을 따르는 것이라 생각된다. 곧 찬드라키르티가 궁극의 경계로서 승의제의 경지를 자성으로 부르고 있는 것을 받아드리고 있는 것이다. 그렇지만 인도 중관파의 역사에서 자성을 승의제로 간주한 사람은 찬드라키르티를 제외하고는 거의 없었다고 해도 과언은 아니다. 따라서 무자성의 논증에 엄격한 입장을 견지하는 쫑카파가 자성을 인정하는 듯한 입장은 쫑카파의 사상 전체를 이해하는 데서도 중요한 문제를 제시하는 것이라 생각된다.
Tsong-kha-pa, who is the great thinker of Tibetan Buddhism and the founder of dGe-lugs-pa, is demonstrating the so-called "the distinguishing teachings of Madhyamaka" in which the absence of Intrinsic Existence(svabhāva) and the meaning of Dependent-Origination have the same meaning throughout Vipaśyanā chapter of Lam Rim Chen Mo which first described his thoughts in earnest. This distinguishing teachings of Madhyamaka is a ideological stance that was emphasized throughout the lifetime of Tsong-kha-pa and shows a clear stance on the absence of Intrinsic Existence. However, in almost the same part of Vipaśyanā chapter, which argues for Non-Intrinsic Existence, Tsong-kha-pa develops an argument that affirms Intrinsic Existence as an existence of Ultimate Reality and the Reality of phenomena(Pāramārtha-svabhāva). It seems quite contradictory that Tsong-kha-pa who is devoted to the argument for the absence of Intrinsic Existence, is arguing for affirmation of Intrinsic Existence. I think this is an important part of understanding Tsong-kha-pa’s thoughts. This position of affirming Intrinsic Existence is based on the position of Candrakīrti, Indian Madhyamaka thinker, which Tsong-kha-pa relies on. This means that Tsong-kha-pa is accepting the Intrinsic Existence as Ultimate Reality that Candrakīrti recognizes it as the Ultimate Truth. However, while Tsong-kha-pa and Candrakīrti use the word Intrinsic Existence as the ultimate truth, they argue that it uses the word Intrinsic Existence in a secular sense. Even being used in this secular sense is the same in both Tsong-kha-pa and Candrakīrti. But no one except Candrakīrti used the word Intrinsic Existence as the Ultimate Truth in the history of the Indian Madhyamaka system. Therefore Tsong-kha-pa’s description of affirming Intrinsic Existence, which maintains a strict position on the proof that there is Non-Intrinsic Existence, is thought to present an important problem in understanding Tsong-kha-pa’s entire thought. |
