| Abstract | 자타카(Jātaka)와 아바다나(Avadāna) 등 불교 설화를 담은 여러 문헌에서는 사신(捨身), 즉 타인을 위해 자신의 몸 또는 신체의 일부를 바치는 이야기들이 흔히 등장한다. 대부분의 사신설화는 보시바라밀과 깊은 연관을 지니고 있다. 이러한 보시 이야기는 불전 뿐 아니라 여타 인도 설화들에서도 가끔 채용되는 모티프로서, 그 가운데서도 초인적 능력을 갖춘 반신(半神) 비드야다라(Vidyādhara)족 왕자 지무타바하나(Jīmūtavāhana, 이하 J)의 가루다를 향한 신체 보시를 주제로 하는 J설화는 인도 설화 중에서도 잘 알려진 것 중 하나이다. 그러나 고전 서사시나 자타카 등 설화의 원형을 다수 포함하는 이 같은 문헌들에서는 이 J설화의 원형으로서 취급 가능한 이야기가 등장하지 않는다. 선행연구에 따르면 J설화가 들어있는 현존하는 운문 전본들은 문헌의 종류에 따라 세 가지 그룹으로 분류되는데, 첫째 그룹은 현존하지 않는 설화집 『브리핫카타』(Bṛhatkathā) 전승의 메인 모티프에 포함된 것, 둘째 그룹은 『베탈라판차빔샤티』(Vetālapañcaviṃśati)에 채록된 것, 세 번째 그룹은 이 둘을 제외한 그 외 전승이다. 본고에서는 선행연구에 기반하여 이들 가운데 두 번째 그룹에 해당하는 『베탈라판차빔샤티』와 세 번째의 기타 전승에 해당하는 『나가난다』(Nāgānanda)에 나타난 J설화를 중심으로 모티프 진행을 고찰하고, 해당 설화가 왕권회복을 위한 통과의례라는 구조적 측면에서 해석될 수 있음을 확인한다. 이는 불교 설화에서 ‘보시’를 중심으로 해석된 기존 사신설화 해석의 또다른 측면을 파악할 수 있는 기회가 될 것이다.
Dehadāna, the act of offering one's body or body parts for others, is a common theme in many Buddhist narratives such as Jātaka and Avadāna. Most of the tales of dehadāna are deeply related to the dāna-pāramitā. These stories are sometimes adopted not only in buddhist literature but also in other Indian tales that are regarded as part of the Hindu narrative tradition. Among them, the story of Jīmūtavāhana (hereinafter J), a prince of the demigod Vidyādhara, is one of the well-known Indian tales with the theme of bodily donation to Garuḍa for saving nāgas. However, there is no story that can be assumed as the original form of the J narrative in the literature that contains many prototypes of tales such as classical epics or jātakas. According to previous research by F. Bosch or Shibajaki Maho, the extant texts containing the J story are classified into three groups according to the type of literature. The first group is recorded in the main motif of the non-existent folktale Bṛhatkathā (BK) tradition. The second group is recorded in Vetālapancaviṃśati(kā) (Vet) and the third group is other traditions excluding these two. This paper focuses on the J story appearing in Vet, which belongs to the second group, and the Nāgānanda (Nāg), which corresponds to the third ‘other’ tradition. In addition, I would like to find that the J narrative can be interpreted in terms of a rite of passage for the restoring royal authority, which is a common structural motif in Hindu narratives. The rite of passage consists of three steps. First, the protagonist’s generosity is emphasized. Second, the protagonist goes through a spacial migration from the kingdom (or grāma) to the forest (or araṇya) and back to the kingdom. Finally, after going through a ritual experience involving danger or death (provoked by self-sacrificial motive), the original royal authority is restored or more sacred authority is acquired through the intervention of transcendental authority or divinity. In this respect, the J story also follows this narrative structure, depicting the process in which the protagonist J acquires the transcendental divinity of vidyādhara cakravartin after going through dehadāna. |
