種子字本意即為植物的種子，具有能生、能藏、帶業流轉的作用。在密教修法中，諸尊種子字不但表徵諸尊內證心要與境界，也可視之為諸佛菩薩本尊，及其真言的心髓，因此常有書寫種子字的「種子曼荼羅」。
