| Abstract | 고대 인도에서 임종(臨終)의 시점을 알고자 하는 욕구는 인도 문헌에 ‘죽음의징조(ariṣṭa)’에 관한 방대한 정보로 드러나는데, 이는 특히 탄트리즘에서 중요하게 공유하는 지식의 하나였다. 인도 탄트리즘의 문화에서 죽음의 징조를 파악하려는 목적은 징조를 파악한 이후에 가능하다면 요가 및 다양한 방법을 통해 삶을 연장하거나, 더 이상 연장하기 어려운 경우 수용하여 죽음의 요가(의식전이 기법, 타신체 이동 기법)를 행하기 위해서였다. 그간 불교 및 힌두 탄트리즘 문헌에 나타난 죽음의 징조와 그 파악 기법에 관해 연구되어왔지만, 자이나교의 경우는 그다지 연구되지 않았다. 본고의 목적은 중세 12세기 탄트리즘의영향을 받았던 자이나교 헤마찬드라의 『요가샤스트라』(Yogaśāstra, YŚ) 5장에수록된 ‘죽음의 징조’에 관한 내용을 분석한 것이다. 이를 위해 Ⅱ장에서는 자이나교에서 YŚ이외에 죽음의 징조를 다루는 여타 문헌에 관해 소개하였다. 특히 11세기 두르가데바의 『죽음징조집성』(Riṣṭasamuccaya )은 향후 YŚ 5장의 내용과 비교하여 연구할 필요가 있다. Ⅲ장에서는 YŚ 5장 전체에서 죽음의 징조위치와 전후 맥락을 고찰하였다. 그리고 Ⅳ장을 통해 구체적인 내용을 고찰하였다. YŚ 제5장 「프라나야마」 장에 총 176게송의 분량으로 나타나 있으므로, 본고에서 그 내용을 분석하였다. 주제와 내용에 따라 분류하면 죽음의 징조를파악하기 위한 수단 및 기법은 1) 프라나야마 2) 점성학 및 점술 3) 얀트라와 만트라 4) 신체적, 물리적 증상 5) 신적 목소리와 신의 강림, 동물적 표식에 의한 것이다. 그런데 YŚ 5장의 말미에서 비대외적으로 사자(死者)소생의례까지거행했던 헤마찬드라가 죽음의 징조파악하기와 의식전이의 기법들이 해탈도에서 필수적이지 않다고 비판함으로써 그 가치를 축소시켰다. 그러나 자이나교내에 고대부터 임종시의 단식사(살레카나, sallekhanā)가 행해졌던 것을 볼 때, 살레카나 시행 이전에 죽음의 징조를 파악할 필요가 있었을 것이므로 그 가치는 여전히 유효했음을 간과할 수는 없다.
Ancient Indians tried to anticipate the time of death. This has been amassed in Indian literature as a vast amount of information about the 'Omen of Death' (ariṣṭa, riṣṭa). This information was one of the most important shared knowledge, especially in Tantrism. The reason why the omen of death is important in Indian Tantrism is to extend life through methods such as yoga if possible after identifying the omen, or to execute the yoga of death (consciousness transfer technique, other body transfer technique). In the meantime, the signs of death in Buddhist and Hindu tantric literature have been studied, but the case of Jainism has not been studied much. The purpose of this paper is to analyze the contents of the 'Omen of Death' contained in Chapter 5 of Hemachandra's Yogaśāstra . To this end, Chapter Ⅱ introduces various literature dealing with signs of death in Jainism. In particular, Durgadeva's Ristasamuccaya in the 11th century needs to be studied in comparison with the contents of Chapter 5 of YŚ. In chapter Ⅲ, the context in which the omen of death is mentioned in chapter 5 of YŚ was considered. And through chapter Ⅳ, the specific contents were analyzed and considered. In Chapter 5, 「 Prāṇayama」, it appears in a total of 176 verses. So, in this paper, the contents were analyzed. There are five ways to identify the signs of death when classified according to subject and content. 1) prāṇayama 2) astrology and divination 3) yantras and mantras 4) bodily and physical symptoms 5) divine voices and descents, animal signs. However, at the end of Chapter 5 of YŚ, Hemachandra reduced the value of anticipation of the death sign and criticised the techniques of consciousness transfer as not essential to liberation. However, considering that fasting to death(sallekhanā) has been practiced since ancient times in Jainism, it would have been necessary to identify the signs of death before the implementation of sallekhanā.
