As a pair of synonyms in the Chinese-translated Buddhist Scriptures poluomen (婆羅門) is a transliteration undoubtedly, while the origin of fanzhi (梵志) still remains ambiguous. This paper questions a common opinion that it is a combined Chinese-Sanskrit word. Based on the comments to the ancient annotations and new researches on the early Buddhist Scriptures, the paper argues that fanzhi is a transliteration from the Middle Indic.
