| Abstract | El artículo describe cómo una disputa de facciones en el budismo camboyano entre tradicionalistas y modernistas, importante en el siglo xx antes de los experimentos de los países con el socialismo, ha resurgido en años recientes. El concepto de boran, o budismo "antiguo," comenzó a ser usado de nuevo después de 1989 con la relajación de los controles sobre la religión y la aparición de organizaciones no gubernamentales y otros tipos de "sociedad civil" en el país. El artículo discute cómo el nuevo boran es de hecho completamente diferente del antiguo y cómo lo que es llamado boran puede variar en contextos diferentes.
The article describes how a factional dispute in Cambodian Buddhism between traditionalists and modernists, important in the 20th century prior to the country's experiments with socialism, have re-emerged in recent years. The concept of boran, or "ancient" Buddhism began to be used again after 1989 with the relaxation of government controls over religion and the new appearance of NGOs and other kinds of "civil society" in the country. The article discusses how the new boran is in fact quite different from the old one and how what is called boran can vary in different contexts. |
