| Abstract | 개교 100주년을 앞두고 있는 원불교가 신앙의 본질을 다시 점검하고 보편 종교로서 거듭나는 것은 중요한 일이다. 그 중의 하나가 신앙의 호칭에 대한 정비작업이다.
신앙의 대상에 대한 호칭은 종교적 정서를 대변할 뿐 아니라 신앙자의 집단적 정체성을 표현하는 중요한 매개가 된다. 신앙생활에 있어서 그 대상에 대한 호칭과 신앙적 정서 간의 관련성은 중요하기 때문이다. 현재 원불교에서 사용하고 있는 기도시의 호칭은‘법신불 사은’이다. 그러나 원불교의 공식적 신앙 대상은‘법신불’이다. 이처럼 공식적 명칭과 기도시의 호칭이 다름으로 인하여 교학적 혹은 신앙정서상 혼선을 가져올 우려가 있다.
‘법신불 사은’처럼 신앙행위에 병렬 또는 설명개념을 사용할 필요가 있을까 하는 점도 문제가 된다. 간결하고 단일화한 개념은 신앙의 대상을 명확하게 하며 신앙감을 고취시키는 데에는 매우 중요한 요소가 되기 때문이다. 신앙호칭을 단일개념으로 통일하자는 것이 본 연구의 목적이다. 방법은 법신불 사은의 명칭이 지니는 의미와 한계를 여러 면에서 비판적으로 생각해 보는 방법을 사용하고자 한다.
그 결과 원불교의 신앙 행위시의 호칭은 일반적 통칭으로는‘부처님(Buddha)’으로 하고, 공식 명칭을‘법신불(Dharmaka-ya-Buddha)’로 통일하는 것이 좋을 것으로 생각한다. 보편적이고 대중적 감성에 호소한다는 점에서‘부처님’이라는 통칭을 쓰고, 신앙의 대상을 공식적으로 표현할 때는‘법신불’이라는 용어를 사용하면 좋겠다. 일각에서는‘일원불’혹은‘원불님’이라는 호칭을 제시하기도 한다. 이는 특유하다는 장점은 있으나 보편적이지 않다는 데에 문제가 있다.
With the 100th anniversary of the foundation of Won-Buddhism fast approaching, itisvitaltoreviewthenatureoffaithandreformasrepresented in this universal religion. One important task is to re-establish a title for the object of faith in Won-Buddhism.
The title of the object of faith not only represents the religious emotion of its members but is also a medium to express the collective identity of faith. In religious activities, a title of the object of faith is significant in evoking religious emotions. Currently, the name of the object of faith in a Won-Buddhist prayer is‘Dharmaka-ya Buddha - Fourfold Grace’, but the official title of the object of faith of Won-Buddhism is‘Dharmaka-ya Buddha’. The difference between the titel used in prayers and the official title of the object of faith could cause potential academic and emotional confusion.
Whether it is necessary to use a parallel or explanatory concept in preyer like‘Dharmaka-ya Buddha - the Fourfold Grace’is another concern. A concise and unified concept is an important factor to clarify the object of faith, which inspires emotions towards faith. The purpose of this study is to unify the titles currently used to express the object of faith into a single concept. The method of this study is to review meanings and the limitations of“Dharmaka-ya Buddha - the Fourfold Grace”from multiple aspects .
This study argues that‘Buddh’should be the name used in conventional religious activites and‘Dharmakaya-Buddha’should be used as the official title. Using the term‘Buddha’will appeal to universal and popular emotion, but as a formal object of worship,‘Dharmaka-ya-Buddha’is more reasonable. Although other alternative terms such as‘lI-Won-Bul(一圓佛)’or
‘Wonbulnim(圓佛님)’have been suggested, they both lack a universal appeal. |
