Abstract作為研究方法的佛教觀念史,緣起於西方史學理論的啟迪;但它何以能兼顧學術傳統與佛教特殊性、又為什麼在佛教研究領域優於與它極其近似的概念史方法,則是有待說明的問題。優波提舍、摩呾理迦等佛教經典體裁,展示了佛教內部的觀念史傳統,作為學術用語的"觀念"亦與佛經原意一脈相承。觀念史方法產生於對哲學思辨和社會生活之中間地帶的"覺察";而佛教觀念史的提出,是基於對佛教整體性、復雜性、動態性的"諦觀"。斯金納與科塞雷克提倡的概念史方法皆與佛教研究有所抵牾;且與概念相比,"觀念"更符合佛教重視的價值意義。觀念史作為研究和解釋的方法,有助于呈現"佛學"亦宗教、亦哲學的特質,避免刻畫靜態化、抽象化的歷史,促進還原生活世界的具體情境。
