Yu-xi Chuan-deng was an important figure in the modern revival of the Tiantai school. During the reconstruction of Gaoming Temple, "The Yu-xi Gazetteers" documented Chuan-deng’s correspondence and exchanges of poetry with scholars, forming the characteristic epistolary style of the Yu-xi Temple. This collection reveals the intricate relationship between Yu-xi’s literary activities and Tiantai teachings, showcasing a profound, inseparable connection, which can be analyzed at three hierarchy: observing principles inside events, figure out events' relationship by principles, and the mutual embodiment of principles and events. First, according to the related literature, Chuan-deng harmonized the doctrines of the Pure Land of Mind-Only and rebirth in the Western Pure Land, which led composing "The Āstra of the Birth and Non-Birth of the Pure Land". And this Āstra is based on Tiantai principles, engages with the teachings of Huayan, Shurangama, and Pure Land, demonstrating the non-traditional Tiantai style. Similar to the modulation of Chuan-deng disciples, the method of "revealing the reality with
expedient teachings" is more esay to explain the Dharma of "The Āstra of the Birth and Non-Birth of the Pure Land". Furthermore, when Chuan-deng lectured on this Āstra, he experienced the extraordinary phenomenon music, which was recorded in the poem of "The Celestial Music Ballad" and other literary works. Although these pieces can't fully represent the theme of this Āstra, interestingly, the mystical response of the celestial music resonated with scholars leading to an exchange of poetic compositions. According to the Tiantai doctrine of inherent Buddha nature, the extraordinary phenomenon music reflect the truth of trilicosm in a conscious instant of Tiantai—unity in diversity, diversityin unity—illustrate the profound and inconceivable Buddha Dharma. This is also shownhow Chuan-deng delivered the concept of "Pure Land rebirth is truly non-birth, and non-birth does not hinder rebirth Pure Land", the scholars were the key media to spread this Āstra and composed endless network and connection.
