Abstract | Chisen 智暹 was a priest of the Honganji Branch of Shin Buddhism in the early modern period. He wrote the Jushin-roku 樹心録, a commentary on Shinran’s Kyōgyōshinshō 教行信証. This commentary influenced the study of the Kyōgyōshinshō in the Ōtani Branch of Shin Buddhism. In particular, Hōrei 鳳嶺 quoted the Jushin-roku in his Hōonki 報恩記 many times. He reconsidered the importance of “the chapter on transformed Buddha bodies and lands” (Keshindo no maki 化身土巻) based on the Jushin-roku. Further, he criticized Chisen’s understanding regarding the single thought-moment of practice (gyō no ichinen 行の一念) and Buddha-nature. |
