Abstract | As a sequel to Yazaki (2022), this study identifies the sources of certain canonical Pāli examples offered in the Moggallānavyākaraṇa and examines the reasons why its author, Moggallāna (ca. twelfth century), provided them in his grammar. It is worth observing that unlike the Kaccāyanavyākaraṇa (ca. seventh–eighth century), Moggallāna takes into account grammatical interpretations found in the Aṭṭhakathās, although he does not always refer to all of them.
1. In M 2.3 (kāladdhānam accantasaṃyoge), Moggallāna presents three canonical examples, namely, pubbanhasamayaṃ nivāsetvā “having dressed in the morning time” (Vinaya III, p. 62), ekaṃ samayaṃ Bhagavā “at one time the Exalted one,” and imaṃ rattiṃ cattāro Mahārājā “in this night the Four Great Kings” (Dīghanikāya I, p. 14; III, p. 2065). In the second example, ekaṃ samayaṃ, the second nominal case ending is introduced after the word samaya, whereas in Sanskrit it is generally read ekasmin samaye with the seventh nominal case ending. In this connection, Moggallāna offers two interpretations, which can be traced back to those observed in Buddhaghosa’s Sumaṅgalavilāsinī (I, p. 333–32).
2. In M 2.9 (dhyādīhi yuttā), Moggallāna provides four canonical examples, namely, dhir atthu maṃ pūtikāyaṃ “Shame on my rotten body” (Jātaka II, p. 43719), antarā ca Rājagaham antarā ca Nāḷandaṃ “between Rājagaha and Nālanda” (Dīghanikāya I, p. 14–5), samādhānam antarena “without concentration” (Udāna-aṭṭhakathā p. 16 note 2), and Mucalindam abhito saram “around Mucalinda lake” (cf. Jātaka VI, p. 5367). Although Buddhaghosa provides an interpretation of the repeated use of antarā in the second example, Moggallāna does not delve into this matter. |
