| Abstract | 본 논문은 바라와 걜챈뺄상(1310-1391)이 스스로를 환영론자이자 자립논증파로 밝힌 점에 주목하여, 환영론자 전통의 철학적 특징인 ‘정립적 부정’과 ‘긍정적 확정’이 그의 여래장 해석에도 적용될 수 있다고 보았다. 본고가 공성에 기반한 바라와의 여래장 해석을 주제로 하면서도 긍정적 확정의 문제까지 다룬 이유는 두 가지이다. 첫째, 이미 앞선 두 편의 논문에서 그의 여래장 해석을 이해하기 위한 전반적인 사항들을 다루었기 때문에 본고에서 동일한 내용들을 반복할 수가 없다고 판단했고, 둘째, 정립적 부정으로서의 공성을 긍정적 확정과 함께 고찰함으로써 공성 해석을 매개로 여래장 해석에서 환영론자의 문제까지로 논의를 확장시키기 위해서이다. 이를 위해 우선 서론에서 환영론자가 개략적으로 소개되었다. 이어서 2장에서는 쫑카파의 비판을 통해 환영론자의 사상적 특징을 검토하고 바라와의 연결 가능성을 탐색했다. 그리고 이러한 배경 하에 바라와의 공성 해석을 분석했다. 바라와는 세속과 분리된 무위(無爲)의 여래장을 모든 현상의 기반으로 간주하며, 이제(二諦)에 상응하는 두 가지 공성을 제시한다. 법계에 적용되는 공성과 세속적 현상에 적용되는 공성이 그것이다. 이 공성들은 비정립적 부정이 아니라 정립적 부정으로서, 실체성의 부정을 통해 광명·순수의식 또는 세속적 현현의 긍정을 함축한다. 따라서 바라와의 여래장 해석은 공성의 관점에서 이제에 각각 적용되는 ‘비공(=존재)과 공(=비존재)의 불가분’으로 이해될 수 있으며, 이를 통해 두 전도되지 않은 견해인 중관과 만트라야나가 만나는 지점을 확인할 수 있다.
This paper focuses on the fact that ’Ba’-ra-ba rGyal-mtshan-dpal-bzang (1310–1391) identified himself as both a Māyopamādvayavādin (henceforth Illusionist) and a proponent of the *Svātantrika, and argues that the philosophical characteristics of the Illusionist tradition—namely, implicative negation (paryudāsapratiṣedha) and positive determination (pariccheda)—are applicable to his interpretation of Buddha-nature. This study addresses the issue of positive determination alongside an emptiness-based interpretation of tathāgatagarbha for two primary reasons: first, to avoid repeating general foundational matters covered in the author’s previous two studies; and second, to expand the discussion of tathāgatagarbha to the Illusionist tradition by examining emptiness (as implicative negation) in conjunction with positive determination. To this end, the paper first provides an overview of the Illusionist tradition in the introduction. The second chapter then examines Tsong-kha-pa’s (1357–1419) critique to explore the ideological characteristics of the Illusionists and the possibility of their connection to ’Ba’-ra-ba. Against this background, the paper analyzes ’Ba’-ra-ba’s interpretation of emptiness. ’Ba’-ra-ba regards the unconditioned (asaṃskṛta) tathāgatagarbha, separate from conventional phenomena, as the ground of all phenomena, and presents two types of emptiness corresponding to the two modes of reality/truth. These are the emptiness applied to the dharmadhātu and the emptiness applied to conventional phenomena. These forms of emptiness are implicative negation rather than non-implicative negation, implying through the negation of substantiality the affirmation of clarity (gsal ba) and cognition (rig pa), or conventional appearance. Therefore, ’Ba’-ra-ba’s interpretation of tathāgatagarbha can be understood from the perspective of emptiness as the “indivisibility of non-emptiness (=existence) and emptiness (=non-existence)” applied respectively to the two modes of reality/truth. Through this can one discern the point of convergence between the two correct views presented by ’Ba’-ra-ba: Madhyamaka and Mantrayāna. |
