AbstractPublished on the lives and inspirations of Thai Buddhist nuns, this work presents an ethnography of the nuns' lives and examines what it means to be a female ascetic in contemporary Thailand.

在泰國,宗教不僅在社會與民眾日常生活的交涉中扮演著重要的角色,也在建立性別藩籬中具有推波助瀾的功用。近10年來自律獨立的尼眾僧團紛紛成立,越來越多的泰國婦女嚮往僧團生活,作者認為這些轉變都是宗教/性別之間互動的結果,故而以人類學的視角,透過泰國尼眾在生活、行為及泰國社會的角色,研究宗教與性別之間的關係。本書在有關泰國尼僧的人種誌中可謂獨樹一幟,不僅檢視了當代泰國女性出嫁的意義,而且也分析了泰國社會中受持具足戒的情況。此外,作者也探討泰國婦女在推動宗教空間與宗教主權上所作的努力。本書對於泰國尼眾在繼承法嗣上的地位問題提出質疑,並敘述恢復上座部女眾僧團的動機所在。
