Abstract本書為作者長達30年的研究成果，不僅從圓仁《入唐求法巡禮記》來透視佛教在中土的情況，並重新檢證佛教為融入中土所編撰的「偽經‧語錄」、「僧制‧清規」，及戒律被接納的情形。除了在序論敘述中國禪宗發展史，本書主要分三大部分：一、唐代後半期的國家與禪宗，包括日僧圓仁見聞的會昌毀佛、成德籓鎮下的佛教、會昌毀佛與金粟如來等；二、宋代的日僧交流，包括禪苑清規與永平清規、南宋的禪林及中日交流下所產生的大應塔銘等；三、蒙古帝國統治下的江南禪宗，包括元代江南佛教、元代中峰明本及其道俗、元代的叢林經營及元末帝師的事蹟。
