Abstract | New edition. A collection of poetry flowing from the experience of the great Chan masters.
For the masters of the Chan tradition, poetry was a form of cretaive expression, but even more than that, it was a primary vehicle for teaching. Here Master Sheng Yen presents ten brief teaching poems from the ancient masters, with illuminating commentary. The poems include: Calming the Mind by Shih Wang Ming; the Mind King by Master Fu; Faith in Mind by Seng Ts'an; Song of Mind by Niu T'ou Fa Jung; Song of Enlightenment by Yung Chia Hsuan Chueh; Inquiry into Matching Halves by Shih T'ou Hsi Ch'ien; Song of the Precious Mirror Samadhi by Tung Shan Liang Chieh; Silent Illumination by Hung Chih Cheng Chueh; and On Clear Mind and Contemplating Mind by Han Shan Te Ch'ing.
"These poems flow directly from the minds of the enlightened Chan masters. We get a glimpse into their experience at the time of, and after, their enlightenment. It is my hope that this collection of poems will give those who are interested in the practice a new way of looking at Chan." Master Sheng Yen. |
