AbstractIt is necessary to employ the Unicode standard to represent Chinese characters in developing the web-based retrieval system for accessing ancient documents written in Chinese characters, such as the Hanguk Pulgyo Chonso. The missing character handling system announced by Electronic Buddhist Text Institute(EBTI) at Dongguk University in 1999, maintains the database of missing characters and corresponding font image files. In this paper, we present the improved missing character handling system which is integrated into the conventional word processor supporting the Unicode, such as MS word. By this approach, the efficiency of digitalization of the Hanguk Pulgyo Chonso or the Tripitaka Koreana, was improved.
