Abstract弘忍法庭甚廣，其門下也出現了“多頭弘化”的局面。圍繞經教的問題，所謂“南能北秀”先不說，（待後文詳論）單從北宗內部看，就分化出鮮明不同的法流。弟子們對於東山門下的經法和心法有不同的側重，如7-8世紀間，弘忍後傳的禪法中，有以法如、李元圭和杜胐等為代表的，主張“教外別傳”，“不立文字”的一流，也有神秀、玄賾和淨覺等傾向於“方便通經”的。
