AbstractThe Kriyāsamgraha (KS), a collection of the Buddhist Tantric rituals of Kuladatta, has a chapter called Pravrajyāgraha?a (or Pravrajyāvidhi, PG), an account of the formalities for receiving a candidate into the clerical order. The PG bases these initiation formalities as a whole on a certain vinaya text, the title of which is not identified. Judging from its contents, the Sanskrit in the PG is originally the same as that of one of the Mūlasarvāstivādin's vinayas, the Gen-ben shuo-yi-qie-you-bu bai-yi jie-mo (根本説一切有部百一羯磨, Mūlasarvāstivāda-eka?atakarman ? EK), preserved in Chinese, partly in Sanskrit. The present writer translates the PG into Japanese, and analyzes its contents in comparison with the EK in Chinese and the Upasa?padājñapti (UJ) in Sanskrit which corresponds to the first parts of the EK. The conclusions are as follows: 1. The PG bases the initiation formalities on those in the EK and describes them in much briefer style than those in the EK or the UJ. 2. The passage explaining the formalities for a novice's receiving his garment (cīvara) and bowl (pātra) is changed by Kuladatta. This means that some Buddhist Tantrists at that time needed a new pravrajyāvidhi different from that of Mūlasarvāstivādin. 3. The sentence "abandoning one's name as a layman, following a certain denomination (nikāya), first pronouncing his name as a bhik?u, he should be given the three refuges (g?hasthanāmaparityāgena nikāyānurūpe?a bhik?unāmoccāra?apūrvakam tri?ara?agamanam kãrayet)," seems to indicate that those who were ordained as bhik?u by the Pravrajyāvidhi of the KS belonged to a certain denomination (nikāya).
