Abstract西語世界的佛教徒可從兩個面向觀之，西語各國的居民及外來東方移民及其后代。西語國家的宗教為天主教，15世紀西班牙于美洲殖民也引入天主教至新大陸，東方宗教如佛教傳入應是20世紀以后。美洲大陸之佛教宗派，聚焦于日本禪宗曹洞宗臨濟宗、及藏傳佛教，中南美洲之漢傳佛教也因慈濟全球小區道場與佛光山美洲各國分院于20世紀90年代之后的耕耘與弘化，信徒數量也逐漸增加。概括言之，佛教最大之吸引力要歸功於對現代人充滿焦慮及不安提供極佳的紓解功效。
