筆者所譯的《作為上師的妻子》(Dragon Thunder—My Life with Chögyam Trungpa)是其妻黛安娜‧木克坡 (Diana Mukpo, 1953-) 的自傳。

As a master of Tibetan Buddhism, Chögyam Trungpa (1939-1987) was highly controversial. He had been presenting the Buddha dharma with unconventional methods since he arrived in the west in late 1960’s, attracting and inspiring numerous spiritual seekers. Yet as a pioneer of Vajrayana Buddhism in the USA, he was heavily criticized for his behavior that violated the Buddhist precepts and worldly values. Dragon Thunder—My Life with Chögyam Trungpa is an autobiography of his wife, Diana Mukpo (1953-). In the book, she depicts Trungpa and the 17 years of their life together from the perspective of a wife. During the process of translating this book, the author found that by manipulating the Trungpa-related descriptions with Buddhist terms and positive phrasing, an image of a great Buddhist master that conformed more closely to the target language cultural ideal was created. From the perspective of patronage, poetics, and ideology (the three major factors that influence translation process) propounded by André Lefever, the author explores external factors and internal mechanism that formed the decision to manipulate, formulates a consistent translation principle, and confirms that glorifying Trungpa is a reasonable and appropriate translation strategy. Then, examples of Buddhist terms and positive phrasing are given and analyzed. Finally, the necessity and meaning of glorifying Trungpa is examined.
