Abstract民國初年,因政治局勢丕變與西方新思潮的傳入,在社會上興起了各種的變革,連帶使佛教界也產生了各種因應的措施與改革,其間,不僅可發現西方「科學化」、「民主化」思維的影響,也可窺見佛教到了清末民初所遭遇的現代化轉折問題,亦即如何使佛教在傳統與創新之間取得平衡、重新締造信仰動力的問題。為此,本文著重在探討民國時期漢地佛教的演變與興革,並分析其中牽涉之複雜的宗教、社會、文化等面向,以呈現民國時期漢傳佛教的大幅革新與轉化過程。在本文的前半,將集中在探討漢傳佛教的現代化轉折,藉由分析改革派僧人、居士、和學術名流等三種角種角色,來彰顯於西風東漸和民主革命的時代背景下,漢傳佛教所產生的異變趨向,之後,則兼述從日本、藏地所傳入的東密、藏密,逐步於民間廣傳時,在漢/藏兼蓄、顯/密互涉的狀態下,對傳統中國佛教的發展,又形成了何種影響?最後,希望藉著民初佛教現代化議題的探究與分析,能對當前台灣佛教發展的現況,產生某種對照性的反思與借鏡。

In the beginning of the Republic Era, the Chinese society had changed a lot through the western trends and abruptly political revolution. Under such a big social context of transformation, the traditional Chinese Buddhism had been influenced and modified in a great scale, by the way of scientific concerns and modernization, developed a total different outlook which we might call it "the modernized turn" of Chinese Buddhism.
Based on this proposition, it will be focused on the reformations of Chinese Buddhism in this period to explore the complicate interactions in the social, cultural and religious levels. From three kinds of people who are reformist monks, famous laymen, and leading Buddhist scholars played the main roles to launch and provoke the Buddhist reformation, it could reveal the content of first stage of modernization in Chinese Buddhism and its significant changes. Meanwhile, the Tibetan Buddhism became wide-spreading gradually in Chinese society for the first time; therefore, the impacts and effects of related phenomena will be discussed on goings as another aspect of modernization of Chinese Buddhism, and according to Jurgen Habermas's definition of modernization, in the sense of multiple disciplines and social communication. At the same time, from the innovation and modernization of this stage, it can be a good reference to reflect the continuing modernity turn of Chinese Buddhism in Taiwan.
