AbstractAn article intended as an introductory chapter to a proposed future full-length work which re-examines the three East Asian traditions of Buddhism,Confucianism and Taoism from the perspective of their deep philoso-phical and religious interconnections. Three basic concepts are discussed in terms of their similar roles in defining the paradigms of each of the three traditions. These three basic concepts are:"integral practice",essence-function and interpenetration.
