Ch'an Master Ming-pen observed the precepts rigorously throughout his life. All through the years he travelled to different places in Chang-nan transmitting Ch'an. He was a well-known and rather influential grand master of the Ch'an Sect during the Yuan Dynasty. He rebuked different wrong views prevalent in the Ch'an Sect during the early period of Yuan Dynasty, and strongly advocated K'an-hua Ch'an (看話禪). He believed that investigating the Hua-ta'ou (話頭) was a show of real practice and actual enlightenment, and was parallel to believing and observing the Buddhist vinaya. He expounded on such ideas as investigating "Wu-i-wei" Hua-t'ou (「 無義味」話頭),"Pu-Ch'i-ti-erh-nien" (「不起第二念」 ) when investigating Hua-t'ou,and "Fei-Ch'an-pu- tso,Fei-tso-pu-ch'an" (非禪不坐,非坐不禪). Ch'an Master Ming-pen also discoursed on the relationship of "certify to one but is named as two" between the Ch'an and Pure-land Sects. He spoke on the attitudes to adopt towards works of the Ch'an Sect such as "Sung-ku" (頌古) and "P'ing-ch'ang" (評唱). He held his own views and understanding on many questions prevalent among the Ch'an monks during the Yuan Dynasty, thus contributing remarkably to the development of Ch'an study during the time of the Yuan Dynasty. |
