AbstractChen discusses the life and works of Fazang (643-712),a Tang Buddhist monk. Fazang is one of the most famous Buddhist philosophers of East Asia, and he is celebrated for founding the Chinese Huayan school,a school of thought based on the Indian text, the Avatamsaka Sutra. Moreover, the other contributions of Fazang are explored to correct some of the major misrepresentations and misinterpretations disseminated by modern scholarship. Furthermore, some aspects of Fazang's complex intellectual and religious life, which have so far been neglected or ignored, are highlighted and uncovered.
