Abstract | The present paper seeks to show that the origins for the concept of the "person of absolute authority" ("tshad-ma'i skyes-bu") in the writings of tsong-kha-pa and his followers should perhaps be sought in the writings of 'bri-gung 'jig-rten mgon-po (1143-1217). traces of a soteriology of buddhist epistemology ("tshad-ma") can be retrieved from his "dgongs-gcig" teachings that were edited and arranged by his nephew and disciple dbon-po shes-rab 'byung-gnas (1187-1241). tsong-kha-pa had studied 'jig-rten mgon-po's writings.
