| Abstract | This document provides an introduction to the standards of scriptural authenticity in Indian Buddhism. It discusses how the Buddhist traditions found themselves with a large body of material claimed to be the "word of the Buddha" and had to determine what was authentic. It outlines several key aspects related to the development of standards: 1) How scriptures were transmitted in early Buddhist communities and the attitudes that allowed elaboration, 2) The role of councils in compiling scriptural canons and establishing purity standards, 3) Claims to authority by Abhidharma masters and their critics, 4) Mythology and apologetics for the Mahayana, and 5) Steps taken by Vajrayana traditions to establish authority. |
