AbstractExplores the economic history of Buddhism in Chinese society. Originally published in French as "Les aspects economiques du bouddhisme dans la societe Chinoise du Ve au Xe siecle." Discusses the number of sanctuaries and monks. Considers the general effects of Buddhism on the Chinese economy as well as the imbalance between production and consumption caused by the movement, the growth of subsidiary activities related to the construction of sanctuaries and the organization of festivals, and the diversion of commercial wealth toward the monasteries. Examines problems for the finances of the empire arising from the tax-exempt status of the monks and the government's sale of ecclesiastical offices granting fiscal immunity to the holder. Considers Indian monastic law and its influence on Chinese Buddhism. Examines the accumulation of assets by Buddhist monks and sanctuaries, addressing monastic landed property, serfs, mills and oil presses, commercial activities, usurious operations, and revenues from gifts and offerings. Discusses Chinese Buddhist tendencies toward competitive giving and sacrifice and their economic effects; the popular social environment and the formation of cult groups and organized associations; the wealthy laity and their political impact; and the motives of the ruling class in either opposing or furthering the Buddhist movement.
Gernet is a member of the Institut de France and Professor Emeritus at the College de France,Paris.
