AbstractThe book focuses on the transformation of the Tendai School from a small & impoverished group of monks in the early 9th century to its emergence as the most powerful & influential school in Japanese Buddhism in the last half of the 10th century- a position it would maintain throughout the medieval period. The Tendai school emerged as the most influential and powerful school in Japanese Buddhism in the last half of the 10th century.

In 9-10th centuries, the Buddhist Tendai school grew from a small outpost to the most influential school in Japan under the tutelage of the monk Ryogen (912985). Focusing on institutional history, Groner examines the reasons for the school's remarkable growth through the window of Ryogen's biography. He examines the structure of success for monks in monasteries, Ryogen's political activity, changes in the Tendai educational system and the priorities and funding of rebuilding efforts after the destruction of the monastery by fire.

This is the first study in a Western language of the institutional factors that lay behind the school's success. At its core is a biography of a major figure who played an active role during the transformation, Ryogen (912985). The discussion extends well beyond a simple biography as Ryogen's activities are placed in their historical and institutional context.
