Abstract發達於唐至南宋的禪宗,其社會基礎是失去土地的農民--流民與失意的士大夫。在禪宗里,有農民和士大夫的投影。禪宗的哲學基礎,集中表現在《大乘起信論》中,禪宗中主的三個學支心學支,理學支,般若學支均可從它的體系中演繹出來。中唐以來,心學支和理學支有過爭論;兩宋,又有文字禪與默照禪的爭論。文字禪肯定語言在掌握客觀真理中的功能,直指般若空觀的理論基石,它的出現,標志著對《大乘起信論》最重要的突破。禪宗內部這些爭論均未很好展開,以致相互矛盾的觀點常混淆在一起。禪宗具非理性色彩,在哲學的理性思考外,還存在另一种思維方式。禪行者在修習中可能產生幻覺,由此而產生所謂「神異」。禪宗對神異主持相信但不宣揚,或不置可否的態度。神異在禪宗中始終悄然流行。為追求誘發神異的幻覺而引起的身心畸變,佛教的理性主義者稱之為「禪病」,禪宗中有治療禪病的經驗積累。在禪宗中,任何經典均不具神聖性,史實也可任意剪裁和捏造,故,禪宗自敘的史籍多不可信。為求得生存權,禪宗有數典造祖的陋習,它為自己制造的宗譜更不可信。相對而言,僧史,寺志,地方志要可靠一些,塔碑記文,正史,筆記的可靠性則更勝一籌。
