| Abstract | Zomgmi (780-841) was a great Buddhist master durins he T'ang Dynasty. He worte a number of books on the rgin and development of various Ch'an sects. This paper xplores Zongmi's analysis of the different Ch'an schools. t shows how Zengmi's comprehension and classification of he different Ch'an techings was not only brilliant but also ccount of the Ch'an Buddhist schools. The paper also examines why Zongmi undertook to analyes nd classify Ch'an sects. His evaluations of the different eaching aims to resolves unnecessary conflicts and disputes mong Ch'an masterrs and followers. His is not only a fine resentation of the Ch'an movement, but he also provides ood suggestions for maintaiting harmony among differrent uddhist sects. Zongmi's intellectual solution of the problem religious difference is commendable even from our modern erspectiove. |
