Abstract | This book is a study of the Buddhist notion of Emptiness in comparison to the Christian notion of God as understood in their spiritualities. Focus is on the Kyoto School philosophers (Zen and Pure Land) and their work relating Emptiness to the kenosis of God. A Christian response is given drawing on mysticism. This is a dialogical exploration of the emptying and kenotic dimensions of Buddhist and Christian spiritual life. The issue of the future of Buddhist and Christian spiritualities is addressed as is the relation between personal and social transformation.
