Within the philosophic traditions of Indian Mahayana Buddhism, other than Madhyamika and Yogacara-Vijnanavadin, Buddhist logic-epistemology (hetu-vidya and pramana) is also a tradition that should not be ignored. Unfortunately, neither ancient nor modern Chinese Buddhism pays sufficient attention to Indian Buddhist epistemology. The study of this field, however, is one of the most fruitful areas of western academic research in Buddhism. This short essay presents the basic issues of western studies of Buddhist epistemology and a bibliography, which covers more than 150 representative books and articles.
