Lee Tung-hsuan is a famous Buddhist layman and scholar of Hua-yen Buddhism in early T'ang Dynasty. The core thought of his New Commentary on Avatajsaka Sutra is the eastern wisdom. In his evaluation of Mabjuwri Bodhisattra, he stressed that the eastern (Chinese) wisdom and brightness are superior to the western (Indian) sorrow and darkness. He advocated the Chinese Buddhist spirit of liberation through wisdom, and opposed the Buddhist's meaningless pursuit of
Western Pure Land. This has the positive significance of Expounding the Chinese people's dignity and individual's confidence.
