Abstract | Aurobindo and Radhakrishnan put forward the thesis that Karmas are evolutionary through the mechanism of rebirth of a soul. According to Aurobindo Karmas are not retributory, that rebirth of a soul is not just transmigration to any form of existence; rebirth is an ascension,a ladder for rising higher through various grades of life forms--plants, animal and humans. According to Radhakrishnan there is an inherent bond between a body and the soul, that rebirth cannot be in a body completely different from the present and that retrogression of a soul to lower forms of existence will be an extravaganza. Brahmanical,Buddhist and Jaina tests do not at all support the above thesis. They aver that there is no inherent bond between Nirquna atma and the body and that it is the Karmas which form the nexus between the two, that the process of rebirth is circular and not an evolutionary progression, that rebirths in the higher and lower life forms are retributory in accordance with the nature of accumulated Karmas. |
