AbstractThe writer applies the concept of Buddhism as a language of images to the study of Thai history. She discusses the organization of the Thai theater state, establishing the symbolic and linguistic parameters of royal and monastic competition. She then illustrates correspondences between modes of religious transtextuality and critical moments in Thai-Isan history--turning points in the relationship between Thai kings and the Lao peoples of Northeast Thailand whom they sought to dominate. She goes on to consider Gerard Genette's categories of transtextuality, which provide an analytic language for appreciating the worlds of irony, allusion, parody, and criticism expressed through the manipulation of Theravada religious images. She concludes by noting that this manipulation of sacred images and practices is disproportionately charged with communicative functions associated with language in Western societies, such as argument, persuasion, irony, and allusion.
