AbstractA review of Tom J. F. Tillemans's Persons of Authority. "The sTon pa tshad... ":A Tibetan Work on the Central Religious Questions in Buddhist Epistemology. This book focuses on the way in which Indo-Tibetan Buddhist epistemologists and logicians evaluate and come to terms with the presumed authenticity of one who has attained buddhahood and his teachings, what types of criteria and hermeneutical tools they use in this evaluation, how they argue for those in the course of making their determinations, and how "reason" and "faith" may be ultimately reconciled. It is one of the more significant contributions to these important questions, but some of its conclusions do not on closer examination jibe with what is known about the historical contours of these problematic issues in Indo-Tibetan Buddhist studies.
