AbstractPlacing the statements and conduct of Zen masters within their linguistic, historical and cultural settings, the book investigates the Zen Buddhist views of reflection, creativity, self-consciousness and freedom. The book develops an existential phenomenology of enlightenment in order to elucidate how such traditional notions as No-Mind, Without-Thinking, and Nothingness constitute the context in which the Zen person acts. The book argues that the Zen concepts are intelligible, philosophically consistent, and suggestive of a new basis for humanism, one that emphasizes action as the defining characteristic of personhood. Whenever appropriate, comparisons and contrasts with other Asian philosophies and modern western philosophy are developed.
