Abstract | This essay argues the plausibility of the implementation of Buddhist education in higher education in Taiwan today on the ground that Buddhist education indeed enriches the impoverished souls of today's college students. Throughout the essay, the case of the Huafan College of Humanities and Technology is taken into consideration for my study of the practicability and plausibility of the implementation of Buddhist education in the curriculum and the student's life of the college. The first part of this essay reviews the paper entitled "How to Implement Buddhist Education in the Engineering College," which I read at the 6th ICBE six years ago in 1988,two years before the establishment of the college, then called the Huafan Institute of Technology. That paper was written in hopes that the points raised in it might be useful and a god reference for the H.I.T. when it was established. Now that the Huafan College of Humanities and Technology (formerly H.I.T.) has been running for four years, it is timely now to review what I said in the paper against what has actually been done so far by the college in respect of the implementation of Buddhist education in the college. The second part deals with how at this stage the Chinese conception of the term "Humanism" with emphasis on Buddhist education should be promoted in higher education in general and in the Huafan College in particular. The following points have been raised for discussion:What is "Humanism"? Its value in students' life; plausible proposals for the cultivation of well-balanced characters, competent in their own intellectual fields and rich in their souls with prajna wisdom and karuna compassion. In Conclusion, the essay points out that, only through the affirmation of the value of humanism along with that of the academic discipline in terms of the intellectual specialty cultivation, can young people be better educated and become the most influential remedy for all kinds of social confusion in Taiwan today. The essay also points out that this is the very ideal goal of Huafan education as advocated by its founder,Ven. Hiu Wan,who has devoted all her life to this sacred cause. |
