Abstract | Buddhism is one of the most important religions in Modem Taiwan. Not only it serves as a guide to the spiritual lives of many people,but also exercises great influence on the society,This paper deals with the development and significance of Buddhism in Taiwan in three parts:
1. The Three periods of development of Buddhism in Taiwan:(1) from the end of Ming Dynasty to the end of the Ch'ing Dynasty,(2) during Japanese occupation and (3) from the recovery of Taiwan to the present. The significant developments in each period and its interaction with the society in general are discussed in detail.
2. The rise of the Tibetan Esoteric Sect:One of the special features of modem Taiwan is the rise of the Tibetan Esoteric Sect. Its reason and impact are discussed in this section,
3. The latent crises and problems of Buddhism in Taiwan:This section deals with the problems of commercialization and rapid over-expansion of Buddhism and discusses the incident of Chungtai Monastery. |
