Abstract | Using sources from Theravada Buddhism, early Jainism, and the monistic and theistic forms of Hindu mysticism, this paper attempts to view the Indian mystic as a hero figure. It is demonstrated that the pattern of the mystic's adventure follows an initiatory structure. It is suggested that the mystic has been influenced by legends and myths of heroes from his own culture. However, the Indian mystic represents a new type of hero. In fact, the mystic transforms the popular conception of a hero and gives this cultural figure new meaning. |
