AbstractEnglish Abstract
There is an interesting text of Chinese Buddhism named Hsichenglun,of which the author is attributed to Bodhidharma, the founder of Ch'an Buddhism. This text was discovered in Tunhuang and has been kept at the Peiching Library in China.

Fortunately,we can now read it with ease,as it was printed in the first volume of the Buddhist Texts not contained in the Tripitaka (藏外佛教文獻) published in Peiching in 1995,whose chief editor was Professor Fang Kuangch'ang (方廣錩).

Professor Fang says in the brief explanation at the beginning of the book that the Hsichenglun is extremely valuable for studying the thought and practice of early Ch'an Buddhism in China.

However,I think that we would not clearly judge it an early Ch'an text.

The conclusion of my research in this paper is as follows. Historical and philosophical characteristics of the Hsichenglun are so much complicated that we need to further investigate it with prudential manner to understand it in its entirety. But,we should notice at present that we precisely see in the text, other than early Ch'an ideas, not only some doctrinal relations to Buddhist thoughts in the Liang Dynasty but also the strong influence of the new religion called Sanchiehchiao (三階教),which raised under the Sui Dynasty and had been repeatedly suppressed through the Tang Dynasty. We can not necessarily regard the text as one of Ch'an texts of the so-called Tungshanfamen (東山法門) or the northern School (北宗) on the grounds of emphasizing "Chenju Fohsing" (真如佛性,Tathata-Buddhadhatu) as inner possibility of enlightenment of all beings and so on. In my opinion,it may have taken place in the earlier half of the eighth century that one or some of Sanchiehchiao Buddhists well versed in Ch'an Buddhism wrote the Hsichenglun and labeled it as a work of Bodhidharma to maintain the religious body of Sanchiehchiao in order to avoid the governmental suppression. An existence of the Rulaishentsanglun (如來身藏論),a text of the Sanchiehchiao, would also support my inference above-mentioned,because it has an essential similarity to the Hsichenglun.
